Don’t Fall for “Personal Data Value vs. Data Protection”:  You Can Have Both!

The landscape often appears bleak for companies looking to use their personal and other sensitive data assets for AI/ML, “big data” projects, and analytics and monetization generally.  You know the story:  even though you’ve locked down your data stores at rest and encrypted it every time it moves, your compliance or privacy minders give you “no choice” between “data value” and “data protection” because the obvious and only real answer is “data protection”.  What used to be a trade-off between risk and return seems gone and companies, maybe even yours, are shutting down data-driven products and services rather than “bet the company”.  With new technologies, this choice is alive again:  you can use your data assets again, with little or even no risk!

Nowhere is this more evident than for “data-in-use”, or the elimination of what Helios Data calls “data usage risk.”  New kinds of math-driven techniques, sometimes called privacy-enhanced technologies, can in some edge cases make it impossible for a data user or processor to ever see or misuse the data to which she has been given access. This seems like the golden key to unlock data for use, especially with data-at-rest and in-motion problems easily solved.  But, not so fast, because these technologies don’t work with many classes of analytics, are operationally crazy-complex, can require highly specialized staff, and even diminish the value of the data itself.  So, what happened to the choice?

Helios Data has pioneered a new solution, integrating two new technologies to create a digital contract-governed secure enclave, our Secure Data Sharing platform, that protects, monitors, and controls all processing activities.  At no point is data (or the algorithm, for that matter) visible to any other party, and the data and the algorithm can be brought together in complete security. Using AI, the digital contract surveilled and enforces the processing according to its terms, including even a pattern (think fingerprint) of the analytic itself!  This works for any platform and analytic, and even enables “clear text” processing to enable data users to get the most out of the data without sacrificing any protection.  You’ve eliminated your data usage risk, and opened the door to using your data!

So there is a choice:  you can both get the value from and protect your data!
